Short Bio
Rev. Joseph P. Riordan, SJ took office as the 9th President of Campion College on July 1, 2025. Born in New York City and raised on the Jersey Shore, he entered the Jesuit novitiate after his graduation from Rutgers College in 1998. He earned a master’s degree in philosophy from Fordham University (2003) and his MDiv from the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, CA (2008). During his Jesuit formation, he taught English literature and classics at St. Peter’s Preparatory School in Jersey City, NJ (2004-2007) and worked in various prison and retreat ministries. After ordination to the priesthood, Father Riordan steeped himself in Semitic languages and biblical studies, completing a licentiate at the Biblicum in Rome (2012) and a doctorate in Old Testament at the University of Notre Dame (2019), focusing on deutero-canonical literature. One of highlights of his academic career is the year he spent at Hebrew University in Jerusalem on a Fulbright fellowship. Before moving to Regina, he lectured on biblical studies at the University of Notre Dame, the Pontifical Biblical Institute, and more recently at Regis College in Toronto. He serves as one of the editors of Biblica and as an advisor to several academic outlets. He is currently writing a biography of the biblical figure Tobit. Father Riordan brings to his role at Campion a passion for Jesuit education and its ideals of Ignatian humanism, eloquentia perfecta, and cura personalis.
