7.2.1 Responsibilities and Expectations of the Dean

Responsibilities of the Dean

The Dean of Campion College has authority for academic matters delegated by the Board of Regents through the President. The Dean reports to the President.

The Dean shall:

  1. Maintain a teaching load and research program as negotiated with the President;
  2. Oversee all general and particular academic matters concerning faculty and students of the college:
    1. supervise the academic staff, especially in matters of tenure and promotion and in the annual review of their progress in their teaching, research, and college and university activities;
    2. oversee the Registrar’s Office and in consultation with the Registrar assign the duties of that office to ensure the efficiency of the procedures and schedules of the office. In addition, the Dean’s office oversees the Campion College Library;
    3. consult with the Executive Director, Administration & Finance in matters which affect staffing, scheduling, or budget in the office;
    4. supervise the scheduling of all College courses in cooperation with the appropriate department heads and area representatives at the College;
    5. chair all meetings of Faculty Forum;
    6. appoint an Assistant Dean in consultation with the President and Faculty Forum;
    7. participate in the negotiations and administration of the College agreement with the University of Regina Faculty Association;
    8. be available to students;
    9. serve as an ex officio member of the Board of Regents;
    10. participate in meetings with officials from the Ministry of Advanced Education of the Government of Saskatchewan.
  3. The Dean shall also:
    1. serve as a member on various councils and committees of the College and of the University as required;
    2. maintain the terms, conditions, and spirit of the federated agreement between Campion College and the University of Regina and sustain regular contact with the Vice-President (Academic), appropriate Deans, Associate Deans, Directors, and Department Heads of the university and of the other federated colleges;
    3. represent the interests of the College during the revision of any academic agreements with the University of Regina.
  4. When appropriate assist the President in representing the College in the public forum with representation outside of normal working hours being negotiated with the President.
  5. Assume any other responsibilities as per policy 3.10.

Expectations of the Dean

Expectations of the Dean must be detailed in the Dean’s contract. Procedures for the review of the Dean shall be clearly outlined in the Dean’s contract and mirrored in the Campion College Employee Manual.

The Dean of Campion College is a person of vision and direction, who:

  1. actively supports and promotes the mission of the College;
  2. promotes discernment and lay collaboration in light of the Ignatian orientation of the College;
  3. positively affects the morale of the College through their leadership;
  4. has a strong and established record in teaching and research, fosters teaching and research skills of the faculty, and is empathetic toward students, staff, and faculty.
