The Feminist Revolution in Religion
Wed., February 5, 2020 at 7:30 pm
(This lecture is not published in booklet form.)
As we enter a new decade, religion and social politics are deeply intertwined and questions regarding equity in the Church continue to swirl. The new feminist revolution seeks creative ways to highlight voices often silenced, raise awareness of intersectionality, and shift the larger conversation while promoting forward thinking transformation. In this talk, Messina will discuss the status of the Church and its influence on socio-political dialogue, the impact of having a progressive pope who has graced the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine, and a new understanding of revolution within the feminist religious movement that claims faith as its foundation to fuel positive social change within Church and society.
Dr. Gina Messina is an American feminist scholar and Catholic theologian, with a focus on the intersection of gender, religion, and politics. She is an Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Ursuline College and a prolific author and editor. Her books include Jesus in the White House: Make Humanity Great Again; Feminism and Religion in the 21st Century; and Women Religion Revolution. She is a sought-after speaker who has appeared on MSNBC, NPR, at The United Nations’ Commission on the Status of Women, and as a TEDx speaker.

Reconciliation in the Age of Rage
Wed., March 13, 2019 at 7:30 pm
Campion Auditorium
(This lecture is not published in booklet form.)
We live in an “age of rage.” Shifting social, economic, and religious paradigms seem to lead to deepening rifts and increased tribalism among persons and groups. In the midst of this, the Society of Jesus reaffirms its mission of “the service of faith and the promotion of justice” with a renewed emphasis on the need for reconciliation: reconciliation with God, with other people, and with creation. Let’s reimagine the apparent tension between reconciliation and justice to find new ways of communicating and collaborating across all that divides us, so as to build communities of creativity and hope.
Father Brian Christopher, SJ is originally from St. Louis but his first assignment as a Jesuit was to work with gang-involved youth in Belize City, Belize. He co-founded a non-profit organization to provide job training and job placement to young men and women, who had dropped out of school. He currently serves as the pastor of St. Martin de Porres parish in Belize City.
