Fearing Responsibly
Fear is often seen as a bad thing that we ought to try to avoid. Fearfulness is sometimes equated with cowardliness even though fear is a prudential response to danger. In fact, it is possible to fear badly or to fear well. One of the ways in which we can fear well is by fearing overstep when we speak for oppressed others. We also fear well when we speak up for oppressed others because we fear remaining silent about oppression. Balancing these countervailing fears is fearing responsibly. I illustrate the point with recent examples.

Hosted by the Department of Philosophy and Classics and the Philosophy Student Society
