Dr. Jan Purnis will present on Adam and Eve and Early Modern Anatomy

This talk will focus on the influence of the story of the Fall of Adam and Eve on early modern medical texts; Dr. Purnis will pay particular attention to the anatomical structure commonly called the Adam’s apple, a term first appearing in English in this sense in the seventeenth century. In addition to tracing the history of the terminology, she will highlight the ideological implications embedded in it (particularly in regard to gender, religion, and the relationship between medicine and popular culture), thereby providing historical context for current perspectives on this anatomical structure, including medical procedures for altering it as a part of gender-affirming treatment.
