The President of Campion College
As Campion College is a Catholic community of learning in the Jesuit tradition, the intent, where possible, is for the President to be a member of the Society of Jesus. Should no qualified Jesuit be available, all efforts shall be made to ensure candidates understand and uphold the Jesuit identity and mission of the College. (see policy related to roles and responsibilities of the President)
Procedure & Guidelines for Appointment of the President:
- The Board of Regents is responsible for selecting a new President and shall appoint a Search Committee to solicit candidates for the position.
- The Committee will consist of two lay members of the Board of Regents (non- faculty, staff, or student), a faculty member, a staff member, a student member (CCSU), and a member of the Corporation of Owners (Jesuit).
- The Committee will appoint a Chair and Vice Chair, which will be presented to the Board of Regents for approval.
- The Board of Regents will provide the Committee with the desired qualities of the new President. The Committee will consult with the Board of Regents, Faculty, Staff, and students on the desired qualities, principal responsibilities, qualifications and experience of the new President.
- The Chairs of the Board of Regents and Corporation of Owners will advise the Canadian Jesuit Provincial of the vacancy.
- The Committee will draft a job advertisement, which shall align with the President’s mandate, as outlined in the policy manual. The advertisement shall be approved by the Board of Regents. When possible, this should be done no later than eighteen months prior to the desired start date to allow for the necessary revisions to the policy manual.
- The Committee will draft a search timeline and establish a budget for the search in consultation with the Board of Regents and the Executive Director.
- The Committee shall distribute the job advertisement, at a minimum, to the Jesuits of Canada, the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, the Canadian Association of University Business Officers, University Affairs, and Higher Ed Jobs. The advertisement will also be shared broadly within the Campion College and University of Regina networks.
- Candidates will submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a one-page direction and vision statement, and names of three references. At least one reference from outside the College and one from outside of the University of Regina.
- Following guidelines that prioritize the President’s qualities, the Committee will short list candidates for a campus visit that consists of an interview, a public presentation, and meetings with key stakeholders.
- The Committee will interview the references of short-listed candidates either in person or via other means of communication (i.e. electronically).
- The Committee will invite those that participated in the campus visits to provide feedback on one or more of the candidates.
- The Committee may interview candidates a second time, if necessary.
- The Committee will make a recommendation to the Board of Regents, presenting a ranked shortlist of candidates along with their assessments. The Committee may recommend a single candidate for consideration.
- The Board of Regents may interview shortlisted candidates at their discretion.
- The Board of Regents will make a recommendation to the Corporation of Owners. If the recommendation is accepted, the Corporation of Owners will seek approval from the Canadian Provincial. If the successful candidate is a Jesuit, approval will also be sought from the candidate’s Provincial, though this is presumed to have been done prior to receipt of their application.
- The Chairs of the Board of Regents and Corporation of Owners will extend a letter of offer to the successful candidate.
- The Board of Regents and Campion College will enter into an employment agreement with the successful candidate. The appointment of the President will be made for a term of five years beginning July 1st.
- The Search Committee’s work will be made available to the members of the Corporation at the time an appointment is recommended. In making the appointment the Corporation will consider the recommendation of the Board of Regents.
- Policy 7.1.2, Review of the President for Renewal, will be applied when presidential renewal is considered.
