Idle Talk

Please join us for the first Fall semester session of Campion Idle Talks on Tuesday, September 24, 4:00-5:00 pm at Campion College, room 104.

Dwayne Meisner will present on Dionysus at Mount Sinai: The Discovery of New Orphic Fragments in 2021.

At St. Catherine’s Monastery, the Sinai Palimpsest Project uses multispectral imaging to recover text that had been erased from medieval parchments. Three years ago, one of the scholars working on this project discovered four pages of ancient Greek poetry that talk about Dionysus as a child. Some scholars have become convinced that these new fragments belong to a lost poem called the Orphic Rhapsodies, which is the focus of my research.

At this year’s first Idle Talk, Dwayne Meisner will present the contents of the new fragments and explain how they have impacted the study of ancient myth.

This presentation is part of the Campion College Idle Talk series, which highlights the work of Campion staff, faculty, and students. Everyone is welcome!
