John Hartney, B.A. (Regina), B. Admin. (Regina), CPA, CMA
Program and Resource Manager, Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region
John graduated from Campion in 1973 with a Bachelor Degree of Arts.
John is proud of the long line of family members that have attended his old alma mater: “The Jesuits and Campion College have educated three generations of Hartneys: my father, his two sons and two daughters and two of his grandchildren.” Many friendships also grew from college life, “Campion College became my new home upon my arrival at the University in the Fall of 1970. During the next 5 years the many students and staff that I met have remained a part of my life.”
He rings in with a fond memory of an unsuspecting mentor, someone who he greatly contrasted. Perhaps therein lies the magnetism between them:
“Dean Fr. Desmond Burke-Gaffney began as my student counsellor but quickly became my lifelong friend. Father Desmond and I had little in common. He was an English scholar, I was not. He was an accomplished university athlete, I was not. He was a loyal Winnipeg Blue Bomber fan and I was not. In spite of the differences, we developed this friendship. I am reminded of Fr. Desmond daily in that our son was named after him!”
Being in service to others is one of John’s mantras. He feels great fulfillment in helping others achieve their goals and hopes that will remain part of his legacy after he retires. John confides, “I am under no illusions, I am coming to the end of my career. My wish is continue to contribute in my professional career and volunteer life.”
John has a long history of community service. He has enjoyed a long volunteer history with the Canadian Cancer Society. In recognition of his service, he was recognized as an Honorary Life Member at the National Level in 1999. He also is a “committed sports dad’” and has been involved extensively as a minor sports coach/manager. From 1996-2000, he also volunteered with the Dr. Martin Leboldus Home and School Association.
John’s latest volunteer effort has been in association with Campion College as chair of the Alumni of Distinction Committee.
